Second Award for 'Aotearoa - land of the long white cloud'

Just found out that as well as selling my sculpture, Aotearoa - land of the long white cloud, it has won the 'Peoples Choice Award' at the Lake House Arts Centre's 'Members Merit Awards' exhibition. I am thrilled that it has won two awards but will be sorry to see it go.

This my latest sculpture, which is being entered in the Annual Members Merit Awards Group Exhibition at the Estuary Arts Centre, Orewa. The exhibition opens on 6 July and runs until 5 August 2018.

There will also be also be three of my Swirl-StoNZ pendants, including 'Prima', which was the very first one that I made.

2017 Estuary Arts Annual Members Awards

Have just returned from our two week trip to the UK, so went to visit the Members Merit Awards Exhibition at the Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa today. I missed the opening night on 7 July, as we were flying back from London, but was pleased that two of my three entries had a very central position in the exhibition.

Lady Aotearoa

I started this sculptural piece while we were waiting for our New Zealand Citizenship applications to be approved (November last year) and I have incorporated some NZ icons (two Kiwi, the Pohutukawa flower, a fern leaf and Koru/fronds which are repeated as curls in her hair) into the design, so it seemed appropriate to call her 'Lady Aotearoa'. Now she is finally finished, here are four different views.

The core of this sculpture is a polystyrene head, which I used a few years ago as display prop, covered in several layers of papier mache and modelling paste and then sealed with acrylic paint and PVA glue. Onto this base I glued round mosaic tiles, made and baked from polymer clay, and then filled the joints with white tile grout.

Lady Aotearoa will be one of my three entries in the forthcoming Members Merit Awards Exhibition at the Estuary Arts Centre at Orewa (north of Auckland, NZ).

Tonight was the opening night of the Members Merit Awards Exhibition at the Lake House Arts Centre.

 

My two entries are 'Green Kiwi' and 'Watching the sunrise over Rangitoto'. I did not get an award at the presentation but can always hope for the People's Choice Award at the end of the exhibition, which I won in 2013.

Members Merit Awards Exhibition 2013

This exhibition runs from Tuesday 26 November 2013 - Sunday 15 December 2013 at the Lake House Arts Centre in Takapuna. The photo used on the advertising poster (shown left) has my 'Spring Trio' in the foreground, which won the Peoples Choice Award last year. This year I have entered two pieces: my 'Golden Wave' sculpture and the Mosaic Strip Mirror, which attracted a lot of comment at the Dunkleys Craft Show.

 

I attended the opening and prize-giving this evening and was disappointed that there was no award this year for sculptural work. All the awards were for various painting and pastel work (2D); whether this was because of the companies sponsoring the event I do not know but it was a shame that the whole area of 3D work was not judged.

'Spring Trio' gets the public vote

At the end of the the Members Merit Awards exhibition, I was delighted to be told that I had won the 'Peoples Choice Award'.

I have two entries, my 'Crocus' mosaic and 'Spring Trio', which is my first major sculptural piece - in fact it is is three pieces (spheres) representing Spring (the original theme of the exhibition). Each sphere represents a different stage of growth from 1 - dividing cells, 2 - developing buds and 3 - growing shoots.

The growing popularity of polymer clay as a fine art medium can be seen at the Members Merit Awards 2012 exhibition, at the Lake House Arts Centre, Takapuna.

 

‘Spring Trio’ is one of two exhibits from local polymer clay artist, Claire Fairweather. It was created with Premo Sculpey, a brand of artists quality polymer clay, now available from Gordon Harris art stores. On the theme of Spring, the three multi-coloured spheres represent different stages of growth.

Claire says: “I had great fun making these pieces and love the tactile nature of polymer clay as an art medium”.

The exhibition opens on 18 September and runs through to 7 October at the Lake House Arts Centre, 37 Fred Thomas Drive, Takapuna.

First creation from my new studio

I am really pleased with my first creation from my new little studio. It is a 3 part sculpture called 'Spring Trio', made especially for the Members Merit Awards exhibition at the Lake House Arts Centre, Takapuna. I will not post a photo until the exhibition opens on Tuesday 18 September.

 

Hopefully I will continue to create great things from my new studio.
